Explore the touchable textural qualities of encaustic wax in this one-day holiday themed workshop led by local encaustic artist Kim McGill Stuart.

Students will use oil pigmented wax, water and fire to emulate textures from coral reefs to smooth surfaces like lake water at dusk. Embed or press objects into wax that are personal to your story. Items like charms, string, bottle-tops, branches work well. Use blow torches and carving tools to create various surface marks and undulations. Participants will learn how to enhance textures with oil paint washes and rubs.

SPRUILL: Nov 12 – Encaustic Texture Class a Success!

Spruill Center for the Arts encaustic wax workshops and classes.–Dunwoody, GA

October 17 Class “Encaustic Fluctuations in Texture and Embedding” a Success!

Our new Encaustic Texture class in October at Spruill Center for the Arts was great! We focused on building texture with wax and embedding components into pieces during this one day workshop. It was so much fun, and I’m very proud of the student work created that day. I taught the accretion technique and the outcome was outstanding!

We will DEFINITELY be teaching this class again at Spruill Center for the Arts. Check our workshops site often for the next texture class and follow me on Facebook at Kim McGill Stuart Encaustic Artist for updates.

Thanks to our students for supporting the encaustic wax workshop program at Spruill. You support enables us to offer more classes and make more great art!

SPRUILL: Dec. 9 – Encaustic Color Explorations Workshop

Encaustic Color Explorations with Kim McGill Stuart

Wednesday, Dec 9, 2015

10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Spruill Center for the Arts

Dunwoody, GA

Live in COLOR, like Robin Williams in “What Dreams May Come” during this one day color workshop. Kim will guide students through the principles of color theory and the making of a color study. Next, students will gain understanding of color mixing and how color is used to create visual effects in your work. Finally, develop your very own personal encaustic color palette that is unique to you and your work.

Students will mix oil pigments in molten wax and compose a palette that helps deliver the artistic message of each piece. The translucent nature of the wax with the boldness of the oil pastels offers a plethora of color fun. Further exploration of analogous, complementary and monochromatic colors will demonstrate how color can bring your work to life!

Register online at Spruill Center for the Arts.

Update: Southern Sweets Owner Nancy Cole Featured in Decaturish

The story of the painting, “Butterflies for Nancy,” that Penny Treese and myself recently put up for auction for the Nancy Cole Care Fund to help with her terminal illness has been published by Decaturish. (Like them on Facebook.)

Another Decatur business owner, Larry McDaniel of Trinity Title on East Ponce, decided with his wife to purchase the painting and give it back to Nancy and her husband. They hope it will soon be hanging in her downtown Decatur Southern Sweets Bakery, alongside the artwork of her husbands’, Phil Allen.

The two couples had bonded by frequenting the restaurant about three times a week over the last several years. Both wives have struggled with cancer. They have all taken a class together from Penny and myself, which is how we met. We will continue to pray for and support this family.

UPDATE: “Butterflies” SOLD in Auction for Nancy Cole Care Fund

Please consider viewing the listing on EBay for this painting we gave to this cause, and consider making a donation to our former student, also the owner of the lovely Southern Sweets Bakery.

From Kim McGill Stuart and Penny Treese:

“We would like to invite you to help Nancy Cole during this difficult time by making a donation to help with the cost of her home care. Last year cancer cells were found in Nancy’s liver tissue, and despite treatment, she continued to deteriorate. Treatment was halted this year, and Nancy was transferred home where she’s receiving constant care.

Nancy, and her husband, were brief art students of ours, her energy made such an impact on us. Her excitement and creativity was moving. It was a joy having her in our class and pleasure meeting her and her husband.”

Thank you sincerely for any help that can be given.
Here are pictures and close-ups of the painting we collaborated on (click to enlarge):
