“Intro to Encaustic Painting Workshop”

Explore the basics of the ancient art of encaustic painting. Encaustic painting uses a wax-based paint composed of beeswax and oil pigment.  We will review safety issues, surface options, color mixing, layering, fusing with a torch, texture and more. This class is for students that have never used wax as a medium before or those that have just started out and want to further develop the technique. Discussions will include setting up a studio, supply resources, mixing colors, and painting molten wax.

  “Beginner to Advanced Encaustic Painting Workshop”

If you’re already addicted to the luscious layering of wax and empowering feeling of “painting with fire,” join Penny Treese in her encaustic painting workshop and elevate your work to a new dimension. This workshop is designed to introduce a variety of techniques, as well as begin open dialogue and encouragement involving the content of students’ paintings. Moving beyond technique, we will delve into what inspires each artist, guiding them into creating successful works of encaustic art.

For more experienced encaustic painters, there’s an opportunity to enhance your practice with a variety of exciting techniques, and to begin to develop of a consistent body of work. Individual instruction aids in taking existing work to a new level.

Previous encaustic experience is not required but an understanding of mixing and creating pigmented wax, using a torch, and safety is encouraged.

  “Intro to Photo-Encaustic Painting Workshop.”

Take your art to new dimensions by learning to combine the ancient art of encaustics with modern photography and printing techniques. Participants will learn how to integrate a photographic image with encaustic through techniques such as layering, painting, and by making the original imagery translucent. We will also demonstrate how to experiment with various methods of manipulating the original photograph-including toning, distressing, and a variety of transfer techniques.  Proper tools and safety procedures will be discussed.

  “Beginner to Advanced Photo-Encaustic Workshop”

  Instructor: Penny Treese
Time: 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

 

Learn several of Penny’s unique techniques and secrets in manipulating images to create photo-encaustic paintings. Add texture to your photos by distressing with water, wine, found objects, steel wool, natural pigments and more. Explore printing and manipulating photos on translucent papers like mulberry, tissue, and other fine art papers. Photos printed on Japanese papers then saturated with natural beeswax and fused, create luminous results to enhance your work’s visual narrative. Learn how layering photos, tearing or cutting your photo then reassembling, and applying washes can create a psychological depth to your carefully chosen photographs. Class includes a pre-workshop “image planning” session with the Penny via email or phone. Penny will guide you through choosing the best photos for this medium and unique workshop.

  “Creating Texture – Encaustic Painting Workshop”

Painting with wax and developing unique and varied mark making allows the artist to create intriguing dips, valleys and textures that onlookers will love to navigate. Explore varied techniques such as scraping, accretion, layering, oil paint washes and more to create vibrant landscapes or abstract expressions. Will it be raised and edgy-smooth and glassy? The kind of effect you achieve will depend on how you “mold” the piece. Build a unique narrative with textures that compliment your voice. Texture is one of the key points that will get your idea across to your intended audience.
