Explore the basics of the ancient art of encaustic painting. Encaustic painting uses a wax-based paint composed of beeswax and oil pigment.  We will review safety issues, surface options, color mixing, layering, fusing with a torch, texture and more. This class is for students that have never used wax as a medium before or those that have just started out and want to further develop the technique. Discussions will include setting up a studio, supply resources, mixing colors, and painting molten wax.  NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.

Explore the rich, touchable and textural qualities of encaustic wax. Spend the day creating tantalizing textures with oil pigmented wax, water and fire. Emulate textures from coral reefs to smooth surfaces, reminiscent of glassy lake water at dusk. Embed or press objects into wax that are personal to your story-charms, string, bottle-tops, branches and memorabilia. Practice enhancing textures with oil paint washes and rubs.  Use blow torches and carving tools to create various surface marks and undulations.

INTRO TO ENCAUSTIC PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED.

LEARN ENCAUSTIC WAX PAINTING ONE ON ONE OR WITH A SMALL GROUP… LEARN AT YOUR OWN PACE.

Kim will teach you the ins and outs of painting with encaustic wax. Learn to melt, color and paint with molten beeswax. Burn patterns and depth into with a blow torch or learn to iron the wax on watercolor paper. Choose a style and learn in a personalized one on one setting or in a small party group with friends.

One-on-One Private Lesson:
2 hour minimum $150.00
+ additional hour(s) $75. per hour

Semi-Private Lesson (2-3 people):
2 hour minimum $100.00 per person
+ additional hour(s) $50. per hour per person

Take your art to new dimensions by learning to combine the ancient art of encaustics with modern photography and printing techniques. Participants will learn how to integrate a photographic image with encaustic through techniques such as layering, painting, and by making the original imagery translucent. We will also demonstrate how to experiment with various methods of manipulating the original photograph-including toning, distressing, and a variety of transfer techniques.  Proper tools and safety procedures will be discussed.

REGISTER! GARAGE DOOR STUDIO: BEGINNING ENCAUSTIC 4-WEEK WORKSHOP

FEBRUARY 5-26, EACH THURSDAY FROM 7-9 PM. $140.

Thoroughly explore the art of painting with fire and wax!

Week 1: Color Mixing, Smooth Works of Wax
Learn the basics of creating colorful palettes. Immediately start painting with encaustic wax. Using blow torches we will create beautiful undulating works of art.

Week 2: Texture, Carving, Turp Wash
Explore texture building techniques that give your paintings bold shapes and deep crevices of color. Using water, blow torches, pottery tools and accretion methods you will explore why painting with wax is so addictive.

Week 3: Photo & Collage Encaustic
Learn how to enhance your photograph or composition using encaustic painting techniques. We will also explore collage methods by adding bits of paper, beads or ephemera.

Week 4: Student’s Choice…create and critique (old and/or new pieces)
